Research Focus

The Manthiram Lab at MIT is pioneering the development of synthetic electrocatalysis of organic molecules - these are catalysts powered by electricity which functionalize organic molecules using nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide, and water. Key challenges we are addressing include how fertilizers can be made from air, carbon dioxide can be converted into fuels, and more complex organic molecules can be synthesized without conventional chemical reducing and oxidizing agents.  More...
